A Few Facts About Air Purifiers

There are a few basic facts that everybody should know when they go looking for an air purifier for their home.

The most important thing to look for in an air filtering system is the Clean Air Delivery Rate or CDR. This is the standard developed by the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers for air cleaning devices. The higher the CADR the more air the unit cleans. This means that you should get a device with the highest CADR possible.

Not all manufacturers submit to testing for CADR but reputable air purifier makers should. If an air cleaner company doesn’t list the CADR on their website or package, that’s probably a good sign it’s not from a good manufacturer.

The best way to remove particles and dust from the air is to use a High Efficiency Particle Arresting filter or HEPA. The HEPA was developed by the US government to remove radioactive waste from federal laboratories. It can remove 99.97% of particle pollutions from the air. Any good air filtration device should use a HEPA filter. Consumers should be warned that unscrupulous marketers may advertise filters that aren’t HEPAs as HEPA filters.

An electrostatic ionizer is a device that charges particles with electricity. This makes the particles heavier so they fall out of the air and don’t get breathed in. The problem with these devices is that they can cover floors and furniture with dust.

Air purifiers with fans work better because they move the clean air around the room. If you buy a room air purifier always get one with a built in fan so it will circulate the clean air through the room. It makes no sense to clean the air in just one corner of the room.

The air cleaner should alert you when the filters need to be changed. Dirty filters can become breeding grounds for germs and a source of air pollution.

An effective air purifier should use all three of the most effective air cleaning technologies. HEPA, activated carbon air filter and germicidal UV lamps. HEPA takes the dust and other harmful particles out of the air. An activated carbon air filter gets traps harmful chemical fumes and smoke including tobacco smoke. A germicidal UV lamp uses ultraviolet radiation to kill bacteria, viruses, mold, funguses and other disease causing organisms. If an air purifier doesn’t do all of these things it is only partially effective.

One kind of air cleaner to be leery of is an ozone generator. This is a device that generates ozone a chemical that can rid of obnoxious smells. Ozone itself is a chemical that can the eyes, throat and nose so it can actually make asthma and other breathing problems worse.
