In 2003, Consumer Reports magazine published an article that claimed the Ionic Breeze didn’t clean the air. The same magazine later published another article alleging that the Ionic Breeze actually put out harmful amounts of a chemical called Ozone that actually makes asthma worse.
Sharper Image sued Consumer Reports for libel over these articles and lost. Sharper Image has since declared bankruptcy and closed its stores. Sharper Image products are still available online. Sharper Image was also hit with a class action lawsuit filed on behalf of asthma sufferers who claimed Ionic Breeze made their breathing worse. Unfortunately the Ionic Breeze and similar products are still available online.
The Ionic Breeze case demonstrates that those who are shopping for air purifiers need to be very careful. Persons with lung and breathing problems should be especially leery of cheaper air purifiers and air cleaning devices sold online.
Most legitimate air purifiers cost several hundred dollars. Any device that claims to be an air purifier and costs less than $100 or $200 is probably a fraud and should be avoided.
A good way to ensure that you are getting a quality air purifier is to look for air purifiers that are certified by the American Lung Association. These devices are actually tested and approved by doctors and other experts.
Another excellent idea is to consult your physician and ask her what sort of purifier you should buy. Doctors who specialize in lung and breathing problems should be able to tell you what kind of air purifier you need in your home.
Legitimate air purifiers should be tested and certified at the factory to clean the air. Purchasers should also look for a guarantee from the manufacturer on air purifiers. If the manufacturer doesn’t guarantee the product it probably isn’t any good.
