Go Green Or Go CleanPlacing a living air filter in your home is a bad idea because these devices are incapable of filtering air and likely to increase air pollution.
The idea behind these filters is that plants can be used to clean the air in your home. Plants absorb carbon monoxide and other harmful chemicals so they can theoretically function as air cleanup devices. The living air filters sold online and by multilevel marketers are small greenhouses attached to a fan. The theory is that the air blown through these devices will be cleaned up.
The problem with using plants as air cleaners is that they will only remove certain kinds of pollution. The plants can remove carbon monoxide from the air but they can’t clear some of the most harmful pollutants including dust, particles, mold, mold spores, viruses, germs and chemical fumes.
Even if the living air filter works, a person would still have to use other air filters including a HEPA device to get particle pollution out of the air and a germicidal UV lamp to kill germs. This means that the living air filter is certainly not a bargain.
There is also a possibility that living air filters could make things worse for people with allergies. Individuals could be allergic to plants including those used in the filter. Putting such a device in the home could theoretically aggravate allergies rather than prevent them.
Another potential problem with plants used to filter air is that they could be breeding grounds for insects. People could be could allergic to the bugs or the bugs could bring germs into the home.
The inside of these filters could also be a breeding ground for mold because it is a closed space that contains water for the plants. The device could end up increasing pollution by blowing mold spores all over the home.
The dirt in which the plants grow is another potential source of air pollution. Particles from the dirt could spread around the house and create more pollution.
Another reason the living air filter should be avoided is that it is often sold through multilevel marketing. Multilevel marketing is a pyramid scam, the marketers supposedly make their living by selling dealerships to others who sell the product. What really happens is that the fraudsters use the proceeds from earlier victims to finance the scam until they run out of suckers.
Obviously no legitimate product would be sold through such sleazy methods.
The only way to truly eliminate air pollution in your home is to invest in a real electronic air cleaner. Fortunately there are many excellent air purifiers that sell for reasonable prices available. |
