Clean The Air In The Whole Of Your HouseA whole house air filtration system is a device that cleans the air in the entire house. Basically such a system is a giant air purifier connected to a system of duct work that moves clean air through the home.
Most whole house air purifiers, such as IQair’s Perfect 16, are connected to an existing forced air heating or air conditioning system. Since the majority of American and Canadian homes have forced air heating these systems are fairly easy to install.
In homes that don’t have central forced air heating or air conditioning, a system of ductwork will have to be installed for such a system. This means that putting separate air purifying units in each room will probably a far cheaper alternative fro those without forced air heating.
The advantage to a whole house system is that only one purifier unit will be needed. This will reduce maintenance costs and energy costs because air purifiers use a lot of electricity. There will only be one set of filters to replace for example. It will also eliminate the noise and vibrations created by air cleaners running in separate rooms of the house.
A big disadvantage to these units is the high cost. Another disadvantage is that such units require professional installation which can also be very expensive. Installation costs for such units may exceed the cost of the system itself.
One cheaper alternative is a furnace mounted unit also called a media air cleaner. This is a unit that is mounted directly on a forced air furnace. Such units are substantially cheaper because they don’t have a built in fan. The drawback to such a unit is that it can only be used when the furnace is running.
Most whole house units include a fan so they can be used all year round. That means the air purifier will still work and circulate clean air even if the furnace is off.
Another alternative that some homeowners should look into is return grille air filters. These are filters that fit over forced air heating vents. This cleans the air in one room without a portable air purifier. These units are a good alternative if air cleaning is only needed in one room of the home.
One potential advantage of installing a whole house air purifier is that it could be written off on taxes. If the system was installed on the advice of a doctor the system is deductible under the US tax code. That could help families offset the cost of putting in such a system. |
